INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT


Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deals with the art of diagnosis, treatment of various diseases, pathologies and defects involving the orofacial region. The objective of the undergraduate and postgraduate training program is to acquire knowledge, skills of examination, understanding the etio-pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment planning of various maxillofacial surgical problems.

We have a fully equipped OT and surgical ICU for comprehensive patient care. Major cases like Ankylosis of TMJ, Facial Fractures, Malignancy, Orthognathic surgeries, Plastic repair, etc. are performed.State of Art minor O.T caters to the minor oral surgery needs of the patients wherein removal of impacted teeth, management of cyst and tumors of the oral cavity, pre-prosthetic surgery, biopsies, and dental implants are performed on day to day basis.


We offer Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. We have collection of teaching resources in the form of books, journals, library dissertation, dissertations, and seminars.

Postgraduate trainees receive training in dental and medical hospital cancer institute, orofacial cleft institutes.

The staff & students participate in CDE’s and conferences at National, State & Local level. The faculty and postgraduate students are involved in various research projects. We take pride in our achievements (curricular/extracurricular), publications (International national, state and local) and presentations. The efficient working of the department is very well reflected in annual UG & PG success rates.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a distinguished specialty which bridges the gap between the medical & dental fraternity. Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, specializes in treating diseases injuries & defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, hard & soft tissues of the Oral (mouth) & Maxillofacial (jaws & face) region. We reach out to children with cleft lip and palate with primary surgery and thereafter orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis and orthomorphic surgery like rhinoplasty and genioplasty to make them acceptable in society. Trauma of the face, from small cuts which need to be sutured to pan facial fractures requiring extensive fixation and reconstruction as comprehensively managed here under General Anaesthesia. Patients with jaw tumours and Oral Cancer are routinely treated with resection, reconstruction and neck dissection when required. Precancer lesions like Oral Lichen Planus, Leukoplakia or Oral submucous fibrosis are treated with medical management of surgery when indicated. Those with pain in the TMJ (Jaw joint) or inability to open the mouth due to TMJ ankylosis are treated appropriately with Arthrocentesis, splints, surgery of TMJ, TMJ reconstruction with costochondral graft or Prosthetic TMJ reconstruction. Our field is expansile beginning with tooth extraction and surgical extraction growing with each day to now include ever craniofacial surgery. Undergraduates and Post graduates are actively involved with the perioperative management of patients and their care. We hope to establish and uphold a centre of excellence for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to reach out to people of Chhattisgarh & Central India.
